The gaming industry owes its very existence to the fact that most players walk away from a bandit with less money in their pocket than when they started. The chances are you might be one of those players. So, what is it that prevents most players from winning consistently? Well, there are many reasons for this, but the main reasons are:

Most punters have no real idea of which bandits to play on, or which ones to avoid.
Most punters have no idea of exactly when a machine is ready to pay out big, or when it isn't.

However, those who know ALL of these things are the ones who can turn the game into a viable profit-making venture. I am one of those people and I want to share all of my secrets with YOU.
How do fruit machines work?
Just about everyone knows that bandits operate on percentages. Each bandit is set (often by the owner) to pay out a particular percentage of the money that it takes in over lengthy period. The percentage can vary from as low as 70% for machines in the UK, to as high as 98% in Las Vegas. Machines with high percentages are known as "loose", and identifying and playing the loosest machines is one vital skill you must have if you want to make a consistent profit and avoid heavy losses. Each machine has to operate in a certain way in order to adhere to its set percentage payout. And when you're aware of all of the little quirks of each machine, you can quickly tell when a machine is ready for a big payout. You can then manipulate its behavior patterns so that a big payout is imminent for YOU.
The Hit Frequency
Another setting that can be altered by the owner is the hit frequency - a parameter which decides the average number of plays the machine is prepared to continue for without offering a win. A machine with a high hit frequency will offer wins far more frequently than a machine with a low hit frequency.
The Pay and Take Cycles
When a bandit is being played, it will be in one of two modes. These modes are known as the pay cycle and the take cycle. However, it is not always blatantly obvious which mode a given machine may be in. There are many subtle areas between the pay and take cycle, and thesedays, most bandits rarely change rapidly from one mode to the other. There will be periods of drought during a pay cycle and periods of pay during a take cycle, but one of these cycles will always be dominant at any given time. The trick is to recognize the mode and play it accordingly.
Randomness
When the reels of any fruit machine are spun, the outcome is always decided by the machine's computer before the reels have even stopped spinning! However, this doesn't mean that the result isn't random. Slot machines contain a random number generator (RNG) that constantly spits out random numbers whilst the machine is switched on. Each random number corresponds to a particular position on each reel. So, when you push the "spin" button (or pull the handle) you aren't really initiating anything except the spinning of the reels, which is merely for show. You are simply telling the computer to display the reel positions that correspond to the last set of random numbers that were generated. It all comes down to the precise moment that you hit the button (i.e. which random number you select). Hitting the button a 100th of a second later would yield a totally different result.
The payout percentage and hit frequency will always ensure that the owner makes the desired profit. However, the RNG ensures that each press of the spin button always has at least some chance of being a jackpot winner for the punter. However, there are far more losing reel-combinations than winning ones. And what's more, the FMC manipulates certain combinations in order to quickly eat up your credits, as you'll see below.
The Fruit Machine's Computer (FMC)
Imagine you put a coin into a machine and press the spin button. The reels spin and you end up with 2 melons on the winlines of the first two reels, and a melon just above the winline on the 3rd reel. You then think to yourself "Oh, I was so close to winning the jackpot". So, you put in another credit, it gives you a hold, and what do you do? Yes, you hold the first two reels and pray for the melon to come in on the third reel. That's exactly what the bandit wants you to do! However, if you held the 3rd reel and let the first two spin, you are effectively re-setting the computer and throwing it out of a sequence of behavior that is designed to waste away your credits. When you do things that the computer is not expecting you to do, you are effectively making it almost impossible for it to settle into one of those money-grabbing patterns of behavior that are designed to make you use up your money faster. This is just one of the many ways in which you can confuse the FMC to your advantage.
